Chapter 20
A deliveryman walked into my office with flowers in his hands. âThese are for you,â he said, setting them on my desk. âHave a nice day.â They were beautiful flowers, such a large, colorful arrangement. The card read, âLooking forward to a special night with my girl. Signed as ever, Daniel.â
The phone rang. I picked it up and heard Danielâs voice.
âHello, Carla, just called to confirm our dinner date for Saturday. Everything still a go, right?â
âYes, right. Your flowers just arrived. Theyâre beautiful.â
âOh, they came then. Iâm glad you like them. Iâll stop by and pick you up at six-thirty. Is that okay?â
âYes, that will be fine. Daniel, Iâd love to talk for a while, but I have a client waiting and I am really backed up. This is my long day. Iâll be working until late this evening.â
âI understand,â he said. âNot all clients can leave work, so evening appointments are necessary. How late will you be working?â
âIâll be here until around eight oâclock tonight.â
âWell, take it easy. Iâll look forward to seeing you Saturday.â He hung up, and I felt drained. The flowers had come at a good time. If my voice didnât sound quite right, the surprise of the flowers made for a good cover-up.
Marcy appeared in the doorway. âAnything I need to know about? This Daniel person looking a little serious?â
âToo early, the jury is out on that one, Marcy.â
âOh, by the way,â she said, âyour mechanic called. He can take your car in today. If you want to meet him at Baltimore and Henderson, heâll switch cars with you and have yours back tomorrow morning.â My mechanic and I had done it this way for years, âspontaneousâ as Colette would have said. âHe said he would meet you there in half an hour. From the look of your schedule, it looks like you could make it back in time for your next appointment.â
âTell him Iâll meet him there.â
I felt my energy level was down about my ankles and headed for my toes. I needed some rest and quiet time. On the way out, I told Marcy that something had come up and I needed her to cancel the rest of my appointments for the day.
âSomething came up?â she asked. âThe flowers are pretty. We are taking the rest of the day off.â She smiled with that all-knowing look.
âMarcy, I only wish I lived in your fantasy world.â
âCome on, Iâve begun to feel deprived. We administrative assistants talk to each other, but I havenât had much to talk about. Their bosses arenât workaholics like some people I know. Letâs face it, your personal life hasnât been too spicy lately. So let me enjoy this, okay?â
I acknowledged her remark. âMy deepest apologies.â I stood in complete and total awe, if she only knew. âOkay, Marcy, Iâll see what I can do for you.â
âHave a nice weekend,â she said.
I nodded. âYou too.â

My cell phone rang as I was pulling out of the parking lot. It was Daniel.
âCarla, Marcy said you just walked out the door, so I got you just in time.
