Chapter 20

A deliveryman walked into my office with flowers in his hands. “These are for you,” he said, setting them on my desk. “Have a nice day.” They were beautiful flowers, such a large, colorful arrangement. The card read, “Looking forward to a special night with my girl. Signed as ever, Daniel.”

The phone rang. I picked it up and heard Daniel’s voice.

“Hello, Carla, just called to confirm our dinner date for Saturday. Everything still a go, right?”

“Yes, right. Your flowers just arrived. They’re beautiful.”

“Oh, they came then. I’m glad you like them. I’ll stop by and pick you up at six-thirty. Is that okay?”

“Yes, that will be fine. Daniel, I’d love to talk for a while, but I have a client waiting and I am really backed up. This is my long day. I’ll be working until late this evening.”

“I understand,” he said. “Not all clients can leave work, so evening appointments are necessary. How late will you be working?”

“I’ll be here until around eight o’clock tonight.”

“Well, take it easy. I’ll look forward to seeing you Saturday.” He hung up, and I felt drained. The flowers had come at a good time. If my voice didn’t sound quite right, the surprise of the flowers made for a good cover-up.

Marcy appeared in the doorway. “Anything I need to know about? This Daniel person looking a little serious?”

“Too early, the jury is out on that one, Marcy.”

“Oh, by the way,” she said, “your mechanic called. He can take your car in today. If you want to meet him at Baltimore and Henderson, he’ll switch cars with you and have yours back tomorrow morning.” My mechanic and I had done it this way for years, “spontaneous” as Colette would have said. “He said he would meet you there in half an hour. From the look of your schedule, it looks like you could make it back in time for your next appointment.”

“Tell him I’ll meet him there.”

I felt my energy level was down about my ankles and headed for my toes. I needed some rest and quiet time. On the way out, I told Marcy that something had come up and I needed her to cancel the rest of my appointments for the day.

“Something came up?” she asked. “The flowers are pretty. We are taking the rest of the day off.” She smiled with that all-knowing look.

“Marcy, I only wish I lived in your fantasy world.”

“Come on, I’ve begun to feel deprived. We administrative assistants talk to each other, but I haven’t had much to talk about. Their bosses aren’t workaholics like some people I know. Let’s face it, your personal life hasn’t been too spicy lately. So let me enjoy this, okay?”

I acknowledged her remark. “My deepest apologies.” I stood in complete and total awe, if she only knew. “Okay, Marcy, I’ll see what I can do for you.”

“Have a nice weekend,” she said.

I nodded. “You too.”

My cell phone rang as I was pulling out of the parking lot. It was Daniel.

“Carla, Marcy said you just walked out the door, so I got you just in time.
